I’m a dentist. I spend my working hours fighting tooth decay and gum disease. I restore smiles.
But, a medical issue can arise that is actually caused by a dental issue. Sometimes it’s the other way around. I treated a woman recently that reminded me, sometimes we have to look at the human body as a whole.
She Had Tried Everything
A little while ago, a 57 year old woman made an appointment with me. She complained that she had tried everything, but her gums were always red, puffy, inflamed, and prone to bleeding.
Any dentist would have looked at this woman and assumed that she never brushed her teeth or flossed; but after speaking with her, I could tell this was not the case.
I prescribed a course of antibiotics. She took them and they seemed to work. Except, as soon as she finished the antibiotics, her inflamed gums reappeared. I referred her to her general practitioner in San Francisco, who determined that she had an autoimmune disease. And, I continued to see her in order to get her gums under control.
As she was meeting with specialists, and nothing was working, she began cutting certain foods out of her diet, one at a time.
When she cut out gluten, her gums went back to normal.
She had been struggling for years (17 to be exact) and had no idea a gluten intolerance was making her gums react so severely.
When in Doubt… Ask!
I tell this story to remind you (and myself) that there are so many factors that contribute to our overall health. Her gluten intolerance is not something I could have diagnosed and even her medical doctors missed it. But, since she was working with her physician and her dentist, she was able to get the relief she needed.
Discovering her gluten intolerance saved my pati
ent a lot of money in the long run. No need for extra procedures or extended amounts of time on needless medications. I know that doctors and dentist offices can be intimidating. It’s always a good idea to ask for help and advocate for yourself!
