Oral pain relief is not something many people think about until that very moment, usually in the middle of dinner and suddenly, one side of your mouth is screaming in protest.
A few hours later, that ache just won’t go away and you think to yourself, “when was the last time I saw a dentist?” Then, you start searching through your medicine cabinet and later the internet for an over-the-counter relief that will help take away that nagging tooth pain.
What Are My Options?
Orajel or Anbesol seem to have cornered the market on oral pain relief. But, both note the following directions on the package: “for expedient, temporary tooth ache pain. Do not use continuously.” These medications will only numb the ache for a short time and are not meant to be used in place of going to the dentist.
An anti-inflammatory like Advil may also relieve pain, but again, only temporarily. There is an old wives tale about placing an aspirin on the toothache itself. Please, do not do this. You could actually give yourself an acid burn and trust me, that’s not something else you want to deal with!
If you are looking for a home remedy, you can try biting on a cotton ball soaked in clove oil. This remedy has been around since the early 1900’s. Clove oil is safe to ingest, it’s a natural analgesic, and can usually be found at your local health food store. Again, this is for temporary relief.
The reason you are experiencing oral pain could be due to a cavity or abscess. These things will not simply clear up on their own and seeing your dentist about this pain is your best bet!
Don’t Play Doctor – That’s Our Job!
The best thing you can do for yourself is rinse with warm water, brush and floss the offending area gently, and call your dentist.
The moral of the story is, there is no reason to endure tooth pain or try to fix it by yourself. Here at Morgan Hill Smiles, your comfort and health are our first priority. If you’re in pain, please don’t wait. Give our office a call and we will make sure to see you as soon as possible.
